Expanding Your Face Painting Portfolio

September 18, 2008 · Filed Under Face Painting Blog, face painting portfolio · Comment

In the beginning when you are trying to build a face painting portfolio, it can be difficult to know what to include.

Do I go for the wow factor? Do I go for the most popular? Do I do include things that are fast and easy to do? The answer to all… yes.

In your face painting portfolio you should have popular face painting designs, quick and easy face painting designs, face painting designs that will wow people and very importantly, you should have some original face painting designs.

Will you have all of this right away? No. But constantly expanding your face painting portfolio is a very important part of becoming a confident and successful face painter.

Here are some ways on creating and expanding your face painting portfolio:

  • Research - You’ll want to check around and see what the most popular face painting designs are. After all, you don’t want to spend your time perfecting designs that will never be requested right? Check the internet, ask kids, and if possible ask other face painters.
  • Make A List - create a list of all the designs that through your research you have found to be popular, quick and easy, and ones that are full of wow factor. You should also take the time to think of a few ideas that you didn’t find in your research.
  • Start Painting - practice, practice, practice. This is the only way you are going to find out what works and what doesn’t. Through loads of practice you will find which face painting designs are going to be possible when there is a huge line waiting. You will also get good at scaling back on a design when you are crunched for time. Paint on yourself, paint on your family, paint on anyone that you can get to volunteer… just paint.
  • Take Pictures - It is really important that you document everything you do. After all, pictures of your face painting designs are what make up your portfolio. Even if you think something doesn’t work so well… take a pic. These pictures can also be used as a guide to show how you are improving over time. I take pictures of every single thing I paint on myself. This marks my improvement and shows that my practice of each design really pays off.
  • Make Sure You Can Paint What’s In Your Portfolio - This part is really important. If you have a design that you struggle through and aren’t too confident in the way it comes out each time… don’t include this in your portfolio. Keep working on it. When you are certain that this is something you are confident in painting then you should add it to your portfolio.

These are just a few simple tips on how to create and expand your face painting portfolio. Just remember… it takes time to build a portfolio that you are proud of showing. Practice truly does make perfect. Good Luck.

Face Painting at Yankee Doodle Homecoming Weekend in Billerica Massachusetts

I am pleased to announce that Body Art by Erin will be at this year’s Yankee Doodle Homecoming Weekend in Billerica Massachusetts.

Yankee Doodle Homecoming Festival
Billerica Town Hall Grounds
September 13, 10a - 5p
September 14, 10a - 4p

Billerica Massachusetts is recognized by Congress as being America’s Yankee Doodle Town. This is due to the fact that Thomas Ditson, Jr., a Billerica farmer, was seized by the British in 1775. He was tarred and feathered and marched through the streets of Boston.

It is said that the soldiers that paraded the tarred and feathered Thomas Ditson, Jr. through the streets of Boston played and sang “Yankee Doodle” which included a verse all about Thomas Ditson, Jr.

Every year Billerica celebrates their revolutionary heritage by holding the Yankee Doodle Homecoming festival. This festival is in honor of Thomas Ditson, Jr. and commemorates Billerica’s role in the fight for American Independence.

As a life long Billerica resident I am very pleased to be taking part in this year’s Yankee Doodle Homecoming festival.

I hope to see you for face painting and glitter tattooing at the Body Art by Erin booth. Face painting prices range from $4.00 - $6.00 and glitter tattoo prices range from $5.00 - $12.00. There is something for everyone at Body Art by Erin.
