Whole Food’s 4th of July Block Party weekend will include not only face painting for the kids but also live grilling demos from the meat and seafood departments as well as store wide sampling. One lucky customer will be chosen to win a new gas grill!

I will be located in Olympic Town which is a carnival style area where different organizations volunteer their services and set up booths for the numerous athletes to participate in. Olympic Town is open from 10am - 3pm.

Special Olympics MA has invited two other temporary body art artists along with myself to handle their expected crowd of over 1000 people who may be interested in getting some face painting or temporary tattoos.

This should be a great event so if you are feeling adventurous, come on down to Special Olympics MA’s Annual Summer Olympic Games which is taking place at Harvard University on June 20th. Olympic Town will be open from 10am - 3pm.

Face painting can be a great addition to any outdoor event but especially an outdoor children’s birthday party.

In Massachusetts the weather is warming up nicely so people are taking their parties outdoors. Kids LOVE getting their faces painted so it just makes sense that a great outdoor activity for your children’s birthday party is face painting.

Depending on the amount of kids you are planning on having, you could book a face painter for an hour or two and turn a great party into a truly memorable one for all kids in attendance.

My suggestion? If you are going to invest some money into your outdoor face painting set up, you should do so by purchasing a canopy. The addition of a canopy to your available face painting supplies will give you the freedom to set up wherever you need to and still be protected from the heat of the sun.

Not only will a canopy come in handy when you are participating in outdoor festivals, it’s also a great option to be able to offer to customers who are hiring you for outdoor events. Sitting in the hot sun for an hour or so is doable. Being in the sun for hours upon end in 90 degree weather… not so much.

A normal weekday for me consists of practicing my craft. I get to come up with ideas by looking at things in everyday life. I then try to incorporate those ideas into designs that can be painted onto the face and body. I love what I do.

Then on the weekends I usually take all of my planning and practicing and put it to very good use. I schedule between one and two events per weekend day.

I travel, with all of my supplies, to wherever the event may be. After setting up I am ready to paint. I love being able to give children (and brave adults) a chance to express themselves through bodyart. My favorite part? I absolutely love to see the look on a kid’s face when they look at themselves in the mirror. Their smile says it all!

Local establishments are always looking for ways to make their St. Patrick’s day celebration a little different from their competitors. I think that hiring a body artist to apply Irish themed art to their patrons is an excellent way for local establishments to stand out from the rest.

I’ve been working on my Irish themed face painting and body painting designs for a while now to ensure that I have a great selection of designs that I can do quickly and perfectly. They will range from tiny shamrock eye accents to elaborate full face designs. Some people like just a little something while others like to go all out on St. Patrick’s Day. I have something for everyone.

It’s never too early to start planning for St. Patrick’s Day!

I love to paint people of all ages. Face painting is definitely not just for children. Teens and adults have a great time with face painting too… if they give it a try.

There are definitely differences between children’s face painting designs and adult face painting designs. With adults, a face painter can take their time and apply some really detailed and far out designs that kids just aren’t going to sit still for.

I used an eye design as an example of something that is more appropriate for adults. Picture this type of design on both eyes to make sort of a masquerade ball type look.

Because of the time that it would take to apply this type of design and because of the stillness required by the person having it applied… this isn’t a children’s face painting design.

I love to be able to really take my time and deliver some wild and different designs that adults end up loving. It’s a fun thing to be able to express yourself through temporary body art such as face and body painting. I love seeing adults let go and just have fun. Face and body painting is an excellent way for that to happen.

Another type of adult painting that I do is pregnant belly painting. This has to be one of my favorite types of body painting. It’s so great to help a mother-to-be celebrate her pregnancy.

Face painters have all different types of face painting styles but they usually share one common theme… their love for face and body painting.

While I do enjoy working with kids, my love is for the body and face painting… not just for the kids. This is why children’s face painting is just a part of what makes up my face and body painting repertoire.

How do I know? Well along with being a Massachusetts face painter, I am also a Massachusetts pregnant belly painter.

It seems that pregnant belly painting evolved out of the old world tradition of people having body art applied to signify a life altering experience.

Take the art of Henna for example. Henna is commonly used to apply body art in the middle east on bride’s just before the wedding. It is also used on… pregnant bellies to signify the beginning of the life altering experience known as birth.

While I think that henna body art applied to pregnant bellies can be extremely beautiful, I prefer pregnant belly painting.

I think the extremely temporary nature of body paint provides the mother-to-be and the artist the freedom to be as creative and expressive as possible.

I really encourage mothers-to-be to put some thought into what they would like to express on their baby bump. It is a way of celebrating your hopes and dreams for your unborn child.

I also suggest documenting your pregnant belly painting with photos or video. This can be a really special way of looking back with your child when they are grown and showing them just how excited you were for their arrival.

Since hygiene should be a face painter’s top priority, face painting during the cold and flu season can be kind of tricky.

There are two issues that a Massachusetts face painter will run into during the cold and flu season: 1) turning away sick kids and 2) knowing when you are too sick to face paint.

No one likes telling a child that they cannot get their face painted BUT, a responsible face painter must turn sick children away from time to time.

What I do is just take a look at a child before I begin painting. If I notice that they have a runny nose or a cough I will break the news to them that they cannot have their face painted. I will try, however, to offer them the option of getting another part of their body painted.

This can still be tricky though. Anyone who has kids can tell you that they are not the most hygienic people. They spend a lot of times wiping their nose with things like… their hands… or their sleeves. Where are you offering to paint them? Their hands… or their arms.

Whenever possible, I ask that the child go wash his or her hands and then allow me to use a hand sanitizer on the area I am about to paint. I feel that by doing these two things I can be pretty confident that I’m not spreading any germs that may or may not be on the child’s hands or arms.

Next comes the issue of the face painter being sick. I actually just ran into this situation and I had to make a tough decision. I woke in the morning and felt a little off. I spent the day getting ready for my face painting event that evening.

I noticed myself becoming real tired and then the nose and eye watering began. I made a decision as early as possible to cancel my services for this event. The reason being is that I was just coming down with the illness and was probably at the most contagious point in my illness. I had both a runny nose and watering eyes and I was sneezing non stop.

If it had been a case of me being in the middle of a cold when you are no longer sneezing and leaking fluids out of your face… I probably would have just taken some cold medicine and gotten through the evening.

I felt I would have been too contagious at this point and unfortunately had to cancel. It was a very tough decision but I felt it was the right thing to do.

So as you can see, face painting during the cold and flu season can be tricky. Although different face painters have different face painting styles we should all hold the same hygienic standards. I think that you really need to listen to your inner voice to avoid spreading sickness to your client’s.

You may be missing out on money but you are being a responsible face painter.

The Santa Clause face painting design that I’m showing in the picture took me a while to apply. Sure, I was applying it on myself which always slows me down but I really need to practice it in order to get to an application speed that will work even when there is a line.

That’s why I think working on your holiday face painting designs ahead of time is important. That way when the actual holiday season is upon us, you’ll be up to speed with your holiday face painting designs.
